Dermatitis caused by diapers and affecting groin, buttocks and perianal areas are very frequent in nursing infants (considering their delicate, thin and sensitive skin) and in incontinent adults. These tend to develop on convex body parts, particularly when the patient remains seated for long. Diapers generally cause continuous rubbing against the skin; by holding faeces and urine they moreover create a hot and humid environment with poor transpiration, a situation which favours:  

  • perspiration
    • skin maceration
    • proliferation of germs and bacteria

The resulting situation involves skin irritation, red dots and reddening in varying degrees. Only in more rare, serious cases, red plaques or small pustules appear cause pain and itching after breaking. Diaper rashes should not be neglected, despite often being only temporary disorders, since they can potentially lead to microbial infections causing fever.

Diapers need to be frequently replaced, allowing for accurate cleansing of the skin with lukewarm water. Avoid soap and other cleansing agents that might further irritate the skin, as well as greasy or absorbent ointments, potentially hindering perspiration; leave irritated parts unconvered as much as possible

Calendula: belonging to the family of Asteraceae, it is native to Europe, North Africa and South-east Asia. Lactobacillus sporogenes and acidophilus: to restore self-defensive balance of the microbial flora in the vaginal environment, thereby countering the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria at the level of mucosae in the intimate parts.

Lactic acid: in normal, balanced conditions, lactic acid is naturally produced at vaginal level by microbial flora, physiologically bringing vaginal pH to 5 – 5.5, which is the optimal condition to contrast pathogens and promote natural, self-defensive balance of the mucosa. Other essential ingredients are: carotenoids, several resins, flavonoids, polysaccharides and mucilages, markedly bioadhesive on skin and mucosae and therefore making the plant particularly useful for health purposes. The most significant actions carried out by this plant are: anti-inflammatory, anti-reddening, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, cicatrizing, analgesic, soothing and decongestant.

Olive oil: obtained by pressing of drupes, olive oil is rich in polyunsaturaed fatty acids, among which oleic acid (75 – 80%), linoleic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, arachidic acid and myristic acid. It moreover contains an unsaponifiable fraction, consisting mainly in squalene, hydrocarbons, triterpene and aliphatic alcohols, sterols, tocopherols and vitamins (K, A, E, D), making it very similar to cutaneous sebum. Owing to its particular constituents, olive oil forms a protective barrier on the skin and carries out an emollient, antioxidant, anti-reddening and rebalancing activity on the hydrolipidic film of the skin. In addition, it proves to be an important agent for cutaneous trophism, by stimulating the reparative processes of epidermis and dermis.

Wheat-germ oil: obtained from cold pressing and lacking solvents of caryopsis embryo (noble part of the grain) of common wheat or corn, wheat-germ oil is characterized by an extremely high concentration of Vitamin E (in the form of natural tocopherols), provitamins A, D, B, lecithin and most of all unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (of which 55 – 60% consists in linoleic acid). Considering its composition of active constituents, wheat-germ oil features the following properties: it creates a protective barrier on the skin and reinforces altered hydrolipidic film; it acts as an antioxidant protecting membrane lipids; it nourishes the skin, protecting and restructuring irritated and peeling skin. Topical application of wheat-germ oil is therefore ideal to restore healthy conditions in irritated and peeling skin.

Almond Oil: this oil is obtained from the cold pressing of Sweet Almonds (Prunus dulcis). It is particularly rich in group B vitamins (B1, 2 and 6) and vitamin E, as well as in proteins, mineral salts (zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium) and most of all fatty acids. Owing to its being rich in fatty acids, it creates a hydrolipidic film that forms a protective barrier on the skin against external agents. Moreover, the plant active constituents contained in almond oil imbue it with the following properties: anti-inflammatory, anti-reddening, soothing action on itching skin, emollient, nourishing and elasticizing, particularly in case of sensitive skin. Finally, when blended with other oils, almond oil promotes their absorption and conveyance of their particular ingredients.

Shea butter: a substance obtained from the seeds of Butyrospermum parkii, a herbaceous plant reaching over 10-15 metres in height which belongs to the Sapotaceae family, native to Africa. It has numerous beneficial properties for several apparatuses of the organism, among which the skin: in fact, this is why it is also called “fruit of the health and youth tree”.

Owing to its composition of plant active constituents, among which vitamins (A,B,D,E,F),  triglycerides (stearic and oleic) as well as an unsaponifiable fraction, rich in terpene alcohols (karitene) and a small quantity of phytosterols, it exerts a protective, filmogenic, emollient, nourishing and hydrating action in formulations for topical application.

Natural Vitamin E: a highly liposulible compound, capable of penetrating into the deeper layers of the skin, promoting absorption of other active principles ingredients in the same formulation. The particular property of vitamin E is that is protects the skin from attacks of free radicals generated by cellular metabolism (as well as from sunrays and external agents); moreover, it has a hydrating, anti-inflammatory, soothing and re-epithelising action, suitable for a formulation aimed at topical application, specifically devised to treat skin irritations and reddening caused by diapers and other factors.

These plant ingredents are artfully conveyed in a product in vegetable oil, in cream form and for local use, to be applied on the area affected by the inflammation.
