About the Disorder

When the mucosa of the respiratory tract becomes inflamed, following the attack of a microbic agent, generally of bacterial or viral origin, the infection can expand, going deep down until it reaches the mucosa coating  trachea and bronchi, giving rise to tracheitis and bronchitis.

This usually signals a debilitated defensive system being attacked by a particularly virulent microbe or a state of alterance of the mucociliary clearance (i.e. the ability of the respiratory tract to expel irritant substances or pathogenic agents trapped in the mucus, through movement of the vibritile cilia). The highest incidence of bronchitis is during   winter; it frequently occurs during seasonal changes and, lately, also during the summer period, particularly with the increasing spread of air-conditioning systems.

Bronchitis can develop as a consequence of common cold or other viral infections of nose and throat. Viruses commonly responsible for the disease include adenovirus, rhinovirus, coronavirus, as well as influenza A and B viruses and para influenza viruses. When the infection reaches the mucosa covering the bronchi, the cough becomes productive, with viscous mucous becoming increasingly copious: almost always a red flag signalling the presence of a bacterial suprainfection.

If unresolved, respiratory tract infections that are triggered by an influenza virus result in an accumulation of mucus that encourages proliferation of bacterial species, worsening symptoms. Typical symptoms of bronchitis are therefore intense cough with phlegm and high temperature, stabilizing around 38 – 39 °C. In asthmatic or allergic patients,  respiratory infections can cause a sudden contraction of the airways, with consequent breathing difficulty.

The chances of contracting bronchitis increases as the immune systems becomes more debilitated. A diet poor in vitamins and rich in refined sugars and foods in general, stress, frequent intake of medicines (in particular of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines) contribute to make the organism more fragile,  prone to viral attacks and bacterial complications. Certain foods, often not recognized, may also well be the root cause of food intolerances. Intolerance to milk, for instance, is one of the major causes responsible for the insurgence of respiratory disorders. Undigested dairy products produce great quantities of mucus, that can get into the respiratory tract causing it to weaken and fall ill.

Treatment of bronchitis with conventional medicine

To address the problem of bronchitis, conventional medicine resorts to the administration of anti-inflammatory medicines, antibiotics, antiseptics, cough syrups, as well as nebulization of solutions for aerosol devices to decongest   bronchial mucosa.  As is well known, the use of antibiotic medicines, apart from not solving the problem and not having any effect whatsoever on bronchitis of viral origin, can have several contraindications: in fact, their use frequently leads to sensitization and causes the insurgence of problems related to bacterial resistance.

Thymus: its essence includes, among other constituents, thymol (up to 55%) and other volatile compounds such as: geraniol, terpineol, cymene, linalool, camphene, borneol. It has antiseptic, balsamic and fluidifying properties.

Atomised sea water: sea water is the most complete mineral water because is contains all elements present in nature. Used for inhalation, it is beneficial in treating or preventing numerous affections and is a good remedy for all respiratory disorders.

Chestnut: thanks to the tannic substances in glucosidic form deriving from gallic and ellagic acid contained in its leaves, chestnut has a marked anti-inflammatory action. It is essential in therapeutic formulations aimed at inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract, as antiseptics, secretolytics, as well as calming solutions for cough. Its sedative action in case of cough is confirmed, though the active constituent responsible for this specific effect has not been identified yet.

Lavender: its essential oil is rich in terpenic substances (geraniol, linalool, borneol, pinene, thymol) and it also contains a significant quantity of coumarin and tannic substances. Red Poppy: it contains a significant amount of mucilages as well as a benzyl- isoquinoline alkaloid called rheadine, which gives the extract sedative, calming properties. It is used as a mild sedative, with a calming, soothing and expectorant effect in case of cough, especially in children.

These plant active constituents are best taken in drinkable formulations.

Mullein: its active constituents s of iridoid type determine an anti-inflammatory action; the combination of saponins and mucillages provides an expectorant, soothing, and emollient action. It is therefore ideal in preparations for internal use whenever there are inflammations of the respiratory tract featuring catarrh and cough.

Enula: the presence of sesquiterpene lactones  (alantolactone, germacrane-D-lactone 8,9-epoxy-10-isobutyl hydroxy-thymol-isobutyrate) is responsible for the secretolytic action of the extract, which, together with its marked anti-inflammatory property, makes it a fundamental ingredient to soothe cough.

Helichrysum: it promotes expectoration and soothes coughing by stimulating the cilitated epithelium; it additionally provides antibacterial action due to its essential oil consisting mainly in terpenes (pinene and geraniol). Moreover, phthalides and pyranoderivatives contained reduce coughing owing to their spasmolytic action. It also finds application in affections of allergic origin involving the respiratory tract.

Raspberry: with its organic acids (malic, oxalic, tannic and tartaric) and pectins, raspberry contributes with anti-inflammatory properties useful in case of airway infections. Moreover, it also adds a pleasant taste to the syrup.

These active constituents are best delivered in drinkable formulations.
